Frequently Asked Questions

  • We create sculptural works that transform space, perception, and presence through material, light, and form.

The Butterfly Art Collective is an artist-led studio grounded in craftsmanship, material exploration, and the enduring presence of well-made objects. Our work invites a slower encounter—where light, color, and transparency shape how a piece is experienced over time. Each sculpture is created by hand, emphasizing patience, precision, and structural integrity. In an era defined by speed and replication, we value process, permanence, and the quiet authority of objects that are built to last. Our work is not meant to overwhelm, but to hold space—for reflection, conversation, and a deeper awareness of what surrounds us.

  • The butterfly represents resilience, transformation, and quiet strength.

We are drawn to the butterfly for its inherent contradiction—delicate in appearance, yet engineered for endurance. Its ability to bend without breaking mirrors the material qualities of our work, as well as the broader idea of persistence through change. Rather than a fixed meaning, the butterfly remains open—allowing each viewer to bring their own interpretation. It becomes a vessel for memory, reflection, and possibility, shaped as much by the observer as by the object itself.

  • The Butterfly Art Collective was founded by artist Cheryl Najafi, in collaboration with artists Gabriel Vinas and Kelsey Vinas.

The studio brings together a multidisciplinary approach to sculpture, combining art direction, fabrication, and material innovation. Cheryl Najafi’s vision established the foundation for the work, while Gabriel and Kelsey Vinas contribute to the development of form, process, and execution. Together, the Collective operates as both a studio practice and a collaborative platform—producing works that bridge fine art, design, and architectural installation.

  • Resilience is a long-term sculptural series exploring transformation through material and memory.

The campaign centers on 25 pairs of large-scale butterflies, each connected to a community impacted by one of the deadliest mass shootings in the United States. One butterfly from each pair is permanently placed within the community, while its counterpart enters exhibitions and collections.
While rooted in specific histories, the work is approached through an art-forward lens—focusing on presence, transformation, and the ways objects can hold meaning over time. The result is both a growing body of work and an evolving national installation.

  • Yes—100% of proceeds from the Resilience campaign support partner organizations.

Initial sales of works from the Resilience campaign contribute to organizations including GIFFORDS and Sandy Hook Promise. Collectors participate in a shared model where each work carries both artistic and broader impact. The piece remains a standalone object, but also part of a larger continuum—extending beyond the studio into communities and ongoing initiatives.

  • Each butterfly is handcrafted through a multi-step casting and finishing process.

The process begins with mold creation and resin casting, followed by detailed surface work using tinted urethane materials. Color, texture, and composition are built gradually, with each layer contributing to how the piece interacts with light. No two works are identical. Variations in pigment, translucency, and application ensure that each butterfly carries its own distinct presence.

  • Butterfly Art Collective produces both limited editions and unique works.

Some butterflies are created as part of a defined series, while others are singular or commissioned pieces. Regardless of format, each work is individually crafted and finished by hand. Editioning allows for continuity within a body of work, while still preserving variation and individuality in each piece.

  • Our work is exhibited through installations, exhibitions, and private placements.

Butterflies are installed in private residences, public spaces, and institutional settings. Select works from the Resilience campaign also travel as part of exhibitions. For current and upcoming opportunities to view the work, we recommend joining our mailing list.

  • Yes—we collaborate on both private commissions and large-scale installations.

We work with collectors, designers, and architects to develop installations that respond to their environment. This can range from a single statement piece to multi-butterfly compositions integrated into architectural space. Each installation is approached with attention to scale, light, and spatial rhythm—ensuring the work enhances and transforms its surroundings. Please contact us if you are interested in a custom installation.

  • The butterflies are designed to be durable, flexible, and long-lasting.

The resin material allows the wings to bend under pressure and return to form, making the works more resilient than traditional rigid sculptures.
To preserve clarity and color, display indoors in a cool, dry environment and out of direct sunlight. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. If necessary, use warm water with mild dish soap and a soft cloth. Avoid harsh cleaners or prolonged moisture exposure.
